6-month Postdoc in Experimental Physical Chemistry Job Opening In Aarhus – Now Hiring Aarhus University


Job description

FemtoLab at the Department of Chemistry, Aarhus University, is seeking a candidate for a 6-month postdoctoral position.

The position is available in the period 1/1-2026 – 30/6-2026

Research
You are expected to take a leading role in the research program, supported by a Villum Investigator Grant, in which femtosecond and picosecond laser pulses are used to study molecules and molecular complexes embedded in nanoscopic droplets of superfluid helium.

Specific projects include, but are not limited to:
1) Time-resolved imaging of cation-molecule complex formation
2) Time-resolved stereodynamics: Orientation of molecules by an approaching ion.
3) Femtosecond-and-atom-resolved solvation dynamics of alkaline earth ions
4) Nano-ruler measurements by laser-induced Coulomb explosion

The experiments will take place in our laboratories at Aarhus University.

Education
You are expected to engage in the education of students at all levels, notably masters and bachelor students, through research-based training.

In practice, this means leading groups composed of a few students in different projects and includes guiding them during experiments, data analysis and in the writing of research documents.
You are also expected to collaborate with the PhD students in the group.

Development of instruments an software
You will contribute to developing the experimental instruments, in particular the optical setup and the helium droplet machines.

Also, you will be jointly responsible for making sure that various experimental apparatus in the laboratories are maintained and serviced with timely care.

In particular, this includes various vacuum components such as turbopumps, foreline pumps, and pulsed molecular valves.

Outreach
You are expected to take a lead in writing research articles based on the results obtained in the various projects.

Also, you are expected to contribute to the content of the group webpage and possibly outreach on social media.
 

Your profile


Applicants should hold a PhD in physics or chemistry.
You must be able to document extensive experience with each of the following points:
  • Atoms and molecules embedded in helium nanodroplets
  • Seeded supersonic beams
  • Ultrahigh vacuum technology
  • Ion and electron detectors
  • Imaging detectors, preferably TPX3CAMs
  • Coincidence and covariance analysis
  • Amplified femtosecond laser systems.
  • Writing of scientific articles
  • Collaboration and mentoring of students at undergraduate and graduate level
  • You must be fluent in speaking and writing of scientific English.


    Who we are/ The department


    The Department of Chemistry at Aarhus University ( is one of the leading European chemistry departments with a broad research programs.

    It has a permanent staff of ~30 full and associate professors, a support-staff of ~30 people, ~150 PhD-students and postdocs and around 400 students.

    The place of work is Langelandsgade 140, 8000 Aarhus C, and the area of employment is Aarhus University with related departments.
