Job description

The Marine Bioacoustics lab at the Section for Zoophysiology at the Department of Biology, Aarhus University, is seeking a skilled and motivated bioacoustician to spearhead the collection and high-end analysis of calibrated acoustic data from monitoring programs, archival tags and animal experiments.

This is a permanent position starting 1/3/26 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Job description

  • You will be responsible for planning, preparing and executing field work in Denmark and internationally using hydrophone and microphone arrays, on animal tags and passive acoustic monitoring devices.
  • You will manage and maintain our recording equipment and undertake calibration and development of scientific equipment.
  • You will set up and curate data bases and develop and use software to perform discrete time series analyses of large acoustic and sensor datasets.
  • You will help supporting and training students and post docs in acoustic analyses and contribute to both specific and general courses as a co-teacher.
  • You will take the lead on writing reports to funders and governments and contribute to peer-reviewed papers and grant applications with data, plots, analyses and writing.
  • Your profile


    A PhD or similar level of documented research experience in bioacoustics, engineering or physics is an advantage, and the candidate should possess strong analytical skills in quantitative acoustics.

    You must have experience with programming in Matlab or Python or similar programming tools.

    You are familiar with mammalian audition and can apply relevant auditory metrics to acoustic data sets.

    At sea field experience and boat handling skills are an advantage and so is work experience with data bases and data curation.

    You must have strong English skills both orally and in writing, and you must thrive in an inclusive multi-cultural and diverse working environment.

    The Marine Bioacoustics lab currently consists of 1 senior PI, 9 post docs, 6 PhD students and several MSc and Bsc.

    It is part of the Section for Zoophysiology, Department of Biology, Aarhus University.
